The jewel box series is the result of trying out the material lab. I played with various settings in the attempt to make cockpit glass. I succeeded and then turned it into jewelry. Go figure.
The jewel box is basic at best and way to large at any rate. I'll fix it and add it as a room fixture later. The last one, the ring, took 16+ hours to render due to it being a close up, though the full scenes took about an hour. The objects themselves are fairly simple. Just using the basic prefabricated objects and tweaked a little.
News! I snapped up a new rig on the super-cheap! My new comp has a P4 2.66 with 512MBs of PC3200DDR so I shudder to think how long it would have taken to render The Ring on my old P2-300 box. Hopefully when PCI-Express comes out, I'll have the scratch for an FX Athlon 3000+ or so and some DDR2. Maybe. Why is this news to you? Faster comp means faster arrivals of new art! Not to mention more fun for me!
